Since a person should know how to preserve their collection and avoid contaminents from touching their coins; here are some tips on how to take care of coin collections:

1. The coin should be protected from exposure to any kind of elements.

2. It is also important not to scratch coins; they should be handled with care to avoid scratches to their surfaces. It is best to store coins in plastic cases or pockets that are made specifically for coins. These cases and pockets will protect your coins from dirt and scratches.

3. Do not touch coins with your bare hands as your natural oils as well as anything on our fingers can over time corrode your coin enough to "stain" or at least leave fingerprints that cannot be removed. If you must handle a coin with bare hands touch only the rim but preferably handle coins with special archival quality cotton or synthetic gloves made for this purpose.

4. It is very important to remember that the value of the coin may depreciate significantly if the coin has been cleaned. It is recommended to seek the advice of an expert if you have a coin which you think can be improved by cleaning. Many coin collectors believe that a person should never ever clean their coins for any reason because they believe that any product that is applied to the coin will affect the surface luster, patina and/or toning.
